Georg Breitner is a Dutch artist and photographer who was ranked among the Impressionists. He himself decided to move away from bright expressionism after a trip to France, moved to a darker art. Amsterdam and its inhabitants often become the main character of his paintings and photographs. The works cause a feeling of hopelessness because of their themes and the chosen colors. Breitner became interested in
photography in 1889. At first, he used photographs to paint pictures. Then this kind of art became something more for him, and he devoted the last years of his life to working with the camera. He paid attention to lighting, movement, so he often photographed people, catching everyday moments from the lives of citizens. In total, there are about 2 thousand negatives in his archive.
