Kurylych M. Hutsul ornament. Kyiv. LC Maker. 2001g. 128p. Solid weave, encyclopedic format. The posthumous edition of the works of the famous graphic artist, researcher of Hutsul folk art and teacher of the Lviv Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts Mykhailo Kurylych (1921-1984) was compiled by his daughter, historian Lesya Dovha. It contains textual and illustrative materials for an unfinished monograph on the origins and genesis of Hutsul geometric ornament, its semantics and transformation that took place in the XX century. According to the author's plan, the study was supposed to combine scientific research, a dictionary, a catalog of ornamental motifs, and, ultimately, a manual for students and folk masters. Mykhailo Kurylych managed to work out only a short historical and methodological introduction and two most important sections of the work: a graphic album of motifs of Hutsul ornament and a dictionary of folk terms, carefully collecting a large number of ornamental elements, their names and meanings, that is, information that largely during the XX century went into oblivion together with the masters of the most terrible generation who possessed it. These unique materials are published in an annotated book, along with a detailed biographical essay by Lesya Dovha, a complete catalogue and numerous reproductions of Kurylych's works of art (including book graphics, bookplates, plastics, interiors, paintings, etc.), lists of books designed by the artist, exhibitions in which he participated, museums where his works are kept, as well as a bibliography of publications dedicated to him.
