The first man in the world who jumped with a pole to a height of more than 6 m was Ukrainian Sergey Bubka. He owns 35 world records. The first of them installed in Bratislava on June 9, 1988 - jumped from the pole to a height of 5.85 m.

Another 19-year-old Sergei made his debut at the World Championships in Helsinki. Suddenly, the unknown newcomer of the USSR national team won pole vaulting. The same victory in the high jump was celebrated by another Ukrainian - Gennady Avdeenko. However, in the future, the career of Bubka sharply went up, and Avdeyenko - on the contrary.

After the record in Padua in the same year, Sergei jumped to 6.13 meters in Japanese Tokyo. The last record was set by Sergei Nazarovich in 1994 - 6.14 m. It was again on Italian soil - in Sestriere. The record has not been beaten until now.

Although Sergei Bubka remains the only athlete in the world, an athlete who became world champion six times in a row, experts believe that the athlete did not fully reveal his potential. His second coach Eugene Volobuev believed that the potential of Sergei is 6.4 m.

For outstanding sports achievements, Sergei Bubka is marked not only by a number of sports awards, but also by state ones - the Hero of Ukraine, three Yaroslav the Wise Order, two Order of Merit, the Order of the State, etc. In addition, he is one of the few people who have been erected a monument in their lifetime.

Today Sergey is a member of the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee and claims the title of its president.
