American pilot Richard Bird first in the world flew over the South Pole by plane on November 29, 1929.

However, when examining his flight diary, traces of erasures were found - thus proving that Byrd falsified some of the flight data in his official report to the American Geographical Society.

In the first half of the twentieth century. Antarctica continued to be a huge white spot. Expeditions to the icy continent were sent almost annually - and the Norwegian, and French, and German, and Australian, and even Japanese. However, the continent as a whole remained unidentified. In 1928, he announced his decision to explore unknown areas of the Antarctic. The airplane, driven by Bernt Balshen, stayed in the air for 19 hours. During the flight over the South Pole, he dropped the American flag.

Byrd described a circle with a diameter of several miles in the air over a theoretically defined pole site.

However, when examining his flight diary, traces of erasures were found - thus proving that Byrd falsified some of the flight data in his official report to the American Geographical Society.
