The art of weaving: new stamps from New Zealand post
New Zealand has issued a series of stamps dedicated to the art of Niue weaving. Many items made by craftsmen on this island are often unique, as each author of a wicker item uses exceptional skills and a special combination of materials. On stamps printed by the new Zealand post, you can see four items that are stored in the collection of the National Museum of New Zealand.
The 30-cent stamp depicts potu, a circular rug made on the principle of lalaga art. The product has various functions: it is used during sleep, and is also a decorative element. The 1.4-dollar stamp is decorated with a kato, a basket made of pandanus leaves. These baskets, consisting of two parts, are simple in design, but very functional. Another brand called kato and a $ 2 denomination is dedicated to a small purse with a strap, also made from Pandan leaves. The bag is decorated with a black pattern. On the most expensive stamp with a face value of 4 dollars, you can see the iliili – a braided fan that contains coconut leaves, pandanus, and is supplemented with human hair.
Stamps have their own color: green, blue, yellow and red. Each of them contains only part of the image of the item. Images in full can be seen on souvenir sheets, where the second half of the drawing of each of the items is presented.
