In Chichen Itza, new residences were discovered, which were obviously intended for the elite. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) is engaged in the excavations.
Chichen Itza is a ruined Mayan city, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is located on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Such a residential complex is the first discovery of its kind. "The residential complex may represent the first residential group where the ruler lived with his entire family," says an archaeologist from INAH. Until now, archaeologists were not aware of any residential structures at Chichen Itza.
These residential buildings have an entrance arch, the House of the Snails, the House of the Moon, and the Palace of the Phalluses.
“Apparently there are more residential groups still waiting to open. The study of these peripheral groups around the central part can tell us about other families, other groups that made up this great city" - comments another archaeologist of the 3rd team.

Archaeologists have been excavating the ruined city for many years, and new finds are not uncommon. For example, a cave that was discovered in 2019 hid dozens of valuable artifacts, bones and places of sacrifices to the gods. And in 2021, archaeologists found a well-preserved Maya canoe. Who knows how many more secrets this land holds.
Soon, visitors will be able to visit the newly found residential complex.
