Ukrainian avant-garde: bright colors and rhythm in the works of Alexander Bogomazov
The name of Oleksandr Bogomazov (1880–1930) is associated with the birth and development of Ukrainian Cubo-Futurism, an artistic movement that combined the geometrized forms of Cubism and the energy of Futurism. He studied painting at the Kiev Art School, learned a lot from Alexander Murashko and Ivan Seleznev, and later improved his skills in private studios.
Creativity Bogomazov inherent riot of colors. The artist was strongly attached to his family, and often in his portraits you can see the faces of his wife and daughter. At the same time, there are still lifes and urban scenes popular at that time; the painter often turned to the topic of technological progress. Many of Bogomazov's paintings were rejected by the public, which did not yet understand bold and sometimes frankly provocative works. True, unlike other avant-garde artists, who often tried to attract attention with noisy performances, Bogomazov acted with restraint and judiciousness, concentrating on painting.
The artist was not limited to the creation of paintings: he taught, and also wrote an important text "Painting and Elements", in which he considered the viewer's perception of the interaction of various structural elements of a work of art. Bogomazov considered the point to be the main material for the construction of lines, planes and forms. All of them are united by rhythm into a single composition. The author painted his paintings based on his own theoretical views. He created the effect of dynamics, bending space and piling up elements, superimposing them on top of each other.
The personality of Bogomazov is lost against the background of other, more famous artists of his era. Only in the 1960s they started talking about him again, and in 2005 the documentary film “Ukrainian Cubo-Futurism and A. Bogomazov” was released.
