With the advent of artistic movements and associations during the first decades of the 20th century, more and more collections and periodicals were published in Ukraine: “Semaphore at the Future”, “Nova Generation”, “Globus”, etc. Among them, a special place is occupied by “New art” is an illustrated weekly dedicated to theater, music, cinematography, painting, and sculpture. A large number of photographs have been published on the pages of the magazine, thanks to which you can find out what the creative life looked like in the era of vivid experiments in art.
Nove Mystetstvo was headed by the writer and popularizer of Ukrainian culture Mykola Hristovy, and the art theorist and theater critic Vasily Butenko (Khmury) was preparing for publication. Most of the work fell on the editor: he corrected and typeset texts, sometimes wrote, and from time to time made expeditions to collect information. The magazine was published in Kharkov for only a few years, from 1925 to 1928, and during this time played an important role in the promotion of modern art.
The weekly published reviews, reviews of cultural events, programs of Kharkov theaters, interviews, etc. Since articles about the history of art were published in other magazines, the editors of Novy Mystetstva decided to bypass this topic. Professional reviewers, musicians, playwrights were invited as authors, among whom were Yakov Mamontov, Leonid Boloban, Philip Kozitsky, Nikolai Plessky.
Music and theater became the main themes, painting and arts and crafts were given a little less attention. Even at the very beginning, in 1925, Vasily Butenko wrote an article about his friend, theater and book artist Anatoly Petritsky. Sometimes publications about European artists (Henri Matisse) and events abroad (excavations in the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum) got into one or another issue.
