The last of the Gryphich and his rare coin.

The last of the Gryphich and his rare coin.

This publication is dedicated to the rare coin of the last Duke of Pomerania and the last representative of the Gryphic dynasty. The rulers of both Western Pomerania (Mecklenburg) and Eastern Pomerania were the descendants of the chiefs of the Wendic tribes. The rulers of Western Pomerania led their family from the princes of the tribe of the Obodrites, the rulers of the Eastern Pomerania represented the princely clan of Pomeranias. According to various researchers, they could be related to the Polish Pyast dynasty.

The dynastic name the Gryphiches comes from the coat of arms on which the griffin is depicted. The first reliable rulers of the dynasty have been known since the 12th century.

For centuries, the dynasty was connected by numerous dynastic unions with the rulers of the countries of Scandinavia and numerous German state formations. After the death of his father, Boguslav XIV shared the possession of the duchy with his brothers.

After the death of the brothers, he unified Pomerania-Rugenwald, Pomerania-Stettin, Pomerania-Wolgast and the bishopric of Cummin.

But the peaceful life of the united state was interrupted by the 30-year war that had begun. In the period from 1627 to 1630, the duchy was occupied and ruined by imperial Catholic troops. After 1630, the imperial troops were knocked out by the Swedes who replaced the imperial troops in the role of the invaders. Until the very end of the life of Boguslav XIV, Pomerania was a zone of confrontation of the rival armies. Boguslav XIV died childless in 1637.

His possessions were divided by Elector of Brandenburg and Sweden. This section was later approved by the Peace of Westphalia.
Coins of the Duchy of Pomerania are rare and are in great demand among numismatists. The article presents a coin with a face value of 1/4 of the taler of Pomerania minted in 1635.
