Sense of rhythm for the price of luxury real estate: John Travolta's suit from "Saturday Night Fever" sold for $260,000

Sense of rhythm for the price of luxury real estate: John Travolta's suit from "Saturday Night Fever" sold for $260,000
The icon of the disco era continues to live and stay in trend. John Travolta's white three-piece suit, which he wore in his Oscar-nominated role in the 1977 disco blockbuster Saturday Night Fever, sold at Julien's Auctions on April 23 for $260,000.

Travolta wore this costume when his character, Tony Manero, teamed up with Stephanie Mangano to dance to the Bee Gees' "More Than a Woman" in a disco dance competition. The costume is also featured in most of the film's promotional photographs, including the posters.

Saturday Night Fever is officially the flagship disco movie. The white suit Travolta wore for the final dance competition became an instant symbol, as did many of the shots and details of the film's scene. His soundtrack was even more successful, becoming the best-selling motion picture soundtrack in history, with over 40 million copies sold.

In 2010, the US Library Congress recognized the film as "culturally, historically, or artistically significant" and it was preserved and archived in the US National Film Registry.

Ultimately, the film, shot entirely on location in Brooklyn, is forever associated with Travolta pacing the streets to the rousing rhythm of The Bee Gees' "Staying Alive".
