Seal to papal bull Boniface IX found in Poland

Seal to papal bull Boniface IX found in Poland
In 2021, a group of researchers from the PARSĘTA Exploration and Search Group discovered in the village of Budzistowo (Poland) a seal for a bull issued by Pope Boniface IX. The discovered artifact was difficult to immediately identify due to corrosion and dirt. The inscription on the obverse of SPASPE points to the apostles Paul and Peter, their portraits are located below. The text on the reverse BONI/FATIUS/PP:VIIII made it possible to identify the Pope.
Budzistovo is located near the town of Kolobrzeg. In the 10th century, Reinburn, the first Bishop of Kołobrzeg, built a residence in these places. The Christianization of the region was somewhat delayed: only in the 12th century was the Church of St. Mary founded. When the settlers founded a new city on the coast of the Baltic Sea, the area around the fortress built by the Pomors was renamed Stary Kolobrzeg, the current Budzistovo.
According to historians, the bull with the seal was kept in a Benedictine monastery. A mention of it can be found in the historical work on Kołobrzeg by Johann Friedrich Wachsen. The artifact is of particular value, because scientists do not know about other relics that belong to the monastery. The bull itself could have lost its significance as early as the 16th century, when the Pomeranian Evangelical Church was formed, and Lutheranism spread in the region.
