Buttons: interesting facts about miniature hardware

Buttons: interesting facts about miniature hardware
Of course, each of us gets used to the objects we see every day. The same story happened to buttons. But a lot of interesting things are connected with these subjects. For example, they began to be used since the 14th century, when gunsmiths began to equip knight armor with them.

Although archaeologists believe that buttons began to be used even earlier. During excavations on the territory of India in Mohenjo-Daro, which date back to 2500-3000 years BC, objects very similar to them were found. Although they resembled flattened parts with two or three holes for sewing.

Cylindrical dumbbell-shaped buttons made of mammoth bone have come down to us from the Late Paleolithic era. Bone disc-shaped buttons with two holes for sewing are known from the Tryplian culture.
It was also noted that the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Slavs had buttons in their wardrobe. Although there were almost no loops on their clothes, which may indicate the use of these items as decorations.

And by the way, this can be confirmed by the materials used for buttons in the past - precious metals and stones, pearls, ivory, etc. Very often their price exceeded the price of the outfit itself.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, there was a tendency to demonstrate one's financial situation by decorating outfits with various additional elements. And buttons occupied far from the last place: on clothes, their number exceeded the actual necessity. For example, one of the suits of the French king Francis I was decorated with 13,600 buttons.

Starting from the 18th-19th centuries, buttons ceased to be an attribute of prestige and luxury, and became available to all strata of the population. The list of materials from which they were created is supplemented by glass and mother-of-pearl. Livery buttons, i.e. buttons with the owner's coat of arms, which were sewn to servants' suits, became especially popular at this time.
