Wangfujing is sometimes called "the first street in China". Located in the historic center of Beijing, it has been a place of bustling trade since the Ming Dynasty.

In the early 20th century, Dong'an Market was established here, and the street itself was then named after English journalist George Ernest Morrison.

Nearly three hundred famous Beijing firms originated here, one of them being the jewelry brand Teh Ling.

The company's company store was located at 27 Morrison Street, later at number 117. Its proximity to the Embassy Quarter meant that its main customers were foreigners.

Silver cigarette cases, officers' canes, mugs, spoons and other luxury items were especially popular with the U.S. Marines, so-called China Marines, based in Beijing from 1927 to 1941.

The Marines took their treasures home, so now this brand remains better known among antique silver connoisseurs on the other side of the Atlantic. Much more often than here, Teh Ling pieces can be seen at U.S. auctions and on TV programs like Antiques Roadshow.
