Nigrinian - a forgotten figure in Roman history and his posthumous antoninian

Today we present the posthumous antoninian of a forgotten character in Roman history, who, although not a caesar or an august, nevertheless received posthumous honors. Depicted on the coin Nigrinian
was the son, grandson or even nephew of Emperor Karin and died as a child. There is practically no information about him. For a long time, historians and collectors could not find out the life time of Nigrinian and his family ties, until in 1888 a pedestal for a statue with the names of Karina and Nigriniana was found in Rome. Coins with the image of Nigrinian were minted in 284/285 and are very rare. Antoninian sold at Violiti in excellent condition. Aureuses with the same plot were also minted, only three of them are known, all of them are shown in the illustration. Diocletian, who soon came to power, cursed the memory of Karin and the name Nigrinian was lost in history for many centuries. Nigrinian's coins were first described in a numismatic work in 1601.
