Recently, in the German city of Aachen, archaeologists discovered part of an ancient Roman defensive structure dating back to the III century. This discovery happened during construction work at the intersection of two streets.
Part of the wall, decorated with towers, extended around the Aachen Marktplatz square. Scientists believe that the found fragment was part of the northern gate of the fortification that surrounded the market square in Aachen.

Investigations of the area helped to find a segment of the wall 7 meters long and about a meter thick. However, the full length of this protective structure remains unknown, as the remaining segments still need to be explored. However, archaeologists are confident that this discovery will allow us to learn more about the history of Aachen.
"This is another fragment of our history from Roman times to the Middle Ages. We know that this complex existed before the time of Charlemagne and later. This place was destroyed only in the 12th century. For about 800 or 900 years, this complex was a defining feature of Aachen," explains archaeologist Andreas Schaub.
Schaub also added that the historical significance of this discovery is difficult to overestimate. After all, the history of Aachen dates back to the Middle Ages, and it is known as the capital of the empire of Charlemagne, and also as the city where subsequent German kings and Roman emperors were crowned until 1531.

Before the Roman legions occupied it in the early 1st century, it was a Celtic settlement with natural sulfur thermal springs, which were transformed into a bathing complex and sanctuary. Roman military presence ceased in the 370s due to pressure from migrating Germanic tribes. Frankish rule was established centuries later.
